     Henry Jack Black, 76, longtime Stephens County rancher, died Tuesday, July 11, 1995, in Stephens Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness
     His service was at 10 a.m. Friday, July 14, at the First Christian Church with Rev. Charles Hamilton and Rev. Don Bright officiating. Burial was in the Breckenridge Cemetery under the direction of Melton Funeral Home.
     Mr. Black was born October 27, 1918 in Breckenridge, The second child of Eddie Lee Bush and Jack Black. He lived in Breckenridge until the family moved to Pomona, California, where he graduated from Pomona High School in 1936. Leaving Pomona for Texas, he planned to attend TCU, but his Uncle Will Black persuaded him to try A&M. At the age 21 he was graduated from A&M in the class of 1940 with a degree in Animal Husbandry.
     While in Texas he was second in command of the Calvary’s Headquarters Troop, an intramural manager, a member of the Saddle and Sirloin Club, the A&M Singing Cadets and the Ross Volunteers. He received his commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Calvary from A&M.
     He married Betty Brewer, daughter of A&M professor A. W. “Pop” Brewer, on November 15, 1940. They moved to Breckenridge and began ranching for about a year before he was called to active duty with the U.S. Calvary. While in the Calvary, Mr. Black served at Ft. Riley, Kansas, and in the 104^th Calvary. He then transferred to the Army Air Force and served in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Colorado. He also instructed flying at Stockton Field, California and flew B-17’s and B-29’s during the war years. He was in the Reserve Air Force and received an Honorable Discharge to resume ranching on the spread that has been in the Black family since 1878.
     Beside ranching, Mr. Black had been employed with the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, Arapaho Petroleum and as a partner in Bill Black Insurance Agency. He was a longtime member of the First Christian Church, where his father had been a charter member. He served as-an elder, deacon and choir member. In 1985 Mr. Black received a Life Certificate for 25 successive years in Breckenridge Masonic Lodge #492, wherw he was a Past Master and member until his death. He was an American Legion life member, a member of the Jaycees, and served Little League Baseball for many years as an umpire.
     Survivors include his wife, Betty (Brewer) Black, of the home; two daughters, Betty Lou (Black) Florentz of Arlington and Sally Clegg of Breckenridge; his sister, Mildred (Black) Johnson of Dallas; and his mother-in-law, Viola Warriner Brewer of Breckenridge; four grandchildren, Brent Clegg of Breckenridge, and Elizabeth LaRue DeMoss, Hank Tosh, and Audra Tosh of Arlington; one great-grandchild, Spencer Henry DeMoss of Arlington; and two nieces and three nephews.
     He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Henry Jack Black Jr., (Hank), and his brother, Bill Black.
     Pallbearers were grandsons, sons-in-law, grandsons-in-law, and Frank Rork.
     Honorary pallbearers were elders of the First Christian Church, members of Masonic Lodge #492, Jim Rominger, Joe Hanna, Lewis Hood, Edwin Goodall, Ross Elliott, Jim Lawrence and Dwight Nichols.
     Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, or to the American Cancer Society, Leukemia Research, and may be left at Melton Funeral Home.
